New Hanover Regional Medical Center is working to provide more parking on campus for visitors and patients. The new NHRMC Employee Parking Garage and Skywalk, which officially opened Monday, is another step forward.
More than 700 employees are assigned to park in the new garage on the opposite side of 17th Street. The shift continues NHRMC’s initiative to move more employee parking off-campus. NHRMC has also added off-campus employee lots at the site of the former Hospitality House and on Hospital Plaza Drive and Doctors Circle.
The new garage uses technology to simplify the parking experience for employees. A light above each parking space glows green or red to indicate open (green) or occupied. Counters at each level display how many spaces remain, or a red X indicates that all spaces are occupied. The counters also show how many handicapped spaces are unoccupied.
The garage is connected to the NHRMC campus via the Skywalk, the elevated pedestrian bridge that extends across 17th Street, providing a safe, sheltered place for employees to cross without impeding traffic flow.
The NHRMC Parking Plan will continue to evolve through 2019, when the new NHRMC Orthopedic Hospital will open on the main campus.
