Weekend of Community Events Shows How NHRMC is Fulfilling Mission

October 29, 2017

Medication disposalLast weekend, New Hanover Regional Medical Center played an important role in three significant community events. NHRMC Administrator of Community Relations Scott Whisnant called Saturday "one of the more remarkable 'missional' days in our history."

He pointed out the success of the American Heart Walk, chaired by NHRMC CEO and President John Gizdic, where our organization raised $43,500, more money than any previous year.

At the same time NHRMC was working with other community leaders in the largest medication take-back event ever in southeastern North Carolina. Altogether, the nine-site event collected 2,880 pounds of medications for safe disposal.

Downtown, Corey Yingling led a team of volunteers handed out hundreds of pounds of fresh produce as a sponsor of the Nourish NC Yam Jam, an initiative to help families in the Youth Enrichment Zone have access to healthy foods.

On Friday, the NHRMC Foundation's Shoot for Loot event put on by Rodgers Builders raised $30,000 and counting for the Betty H. Cameron Women's & Children's Hospital.

"Here’s to hoping that, in the not-too-distant future, days like Oct. 28, 2017 are not that unusual, because we are constantly living out our mission," Whisnant wrote. "But for how, I hope you all are as proud as I am about who we are becoming."
