NHRMC to Offer 3D Mammography for Breast Exams

September 14, 2016

WILMINGTON, NC – New Hanover Regional Medical Center will offer advanced 3D mammography technology at five NHRMC Health & Diagnostic locations beginning Sept. 28.

A 3D mammography scan works by capturing multiple images from several angles, giving physicians a layer-by-layer view of breast tissue, which allows masses and distortions associated with breast cancers to be seen more clearly.

“We are excited to bring this technology to our patients. NHRMC is committed to the early detection of breast cancer and state-of-the-art care, and 3D mammography allows us to provide effective and high-quality imaging that patients deserve and expect,” said NHRMC Vice President of Cardiac and Clinical Support Services David Parks.

Research from the Journal of the American Medical Association found that using 3D mammography exams for breast cancer screenings can lead to sustained and improved health outcomes. Compared to 2D imaging, research shows 3D mammography exams provide a 41 percent increase in the detection of invasive breast cancers, compared to 2D alone; and up to 40 percent reduction in false-positive recalls.

All patients will have access to 3D mammography and 2D mammography if they request it. Medicare covers 100 percent of the cost of 3D screening mammography. Patients with commercial insurance should contact their insurance provider to determine if their plan covers 3D screening mammography. If 3D screening mammography is not covered by the insurance provider, there may be an additional fee for the interpretation of the 3D screening mammography from an independent radiologist practice.

The following NHRMC Health & Diagnostics locations will offer 3D mammography:
• NHRMC Medical Mall
• Military Cutoff
• North
• Brunswick Forest
• Rocky Point

Patients whose insurance does not cover the 3D interpretation, and who meet certain financial criteria, may be eligible to receive assistance from the NHRMC Foundation Pink Ribbon Project. To learn more about the Pink Ribbon Project, call 910.667.8297 or visit www.nhrmcfoundation.org.
