New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s Bariatric Surgery Program has been designated as a Blue Distinction® Center+ by Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. Blue Distinction Centers+ for Bariatric Surgery are healthcare facilities with demonstrated expertise and a commitment to quality care while meeting requirements for cost efficiency.
“This designation acknowledges our commitment to delivering exceptional care to our patients on a daily basis,” said Kim Joyner, RN, NHRMC Bariatric Outcomes manager. “We are proud to be recognized by Blue Cross and Blue Shield for meeting the rigorous selection criteria.”
Blue Distinction Centers+ for Bariatric Surgery designations are awarded for two types of bariatric procedures: gastric stapling and gastric banding. To be considered for designation, the facility must provide a full range of bariatric surgery care, including inpatient care, postoperative care, outpatient follow-up care and patient education.
Evaluation criteria are based on what impacts the patient and patient care the most, including the expertise of the medical team, the number of times NHRMC has performed bariatric procedures and NHRMC’s track record for procedure results.
The following surgeons currently perform bariatric procedures at NHRMC:
James A. Harris, MD, Coastal Surgery Specialists
William B. Hooks III, MD, General Surgery Specialists – NHRMC Physician Group
David R. Miles, MD, FACS, Miles Surgical Associates

About The Blue Distinction Centers Recognition Program: The Blue Distinction Specialty Care Program is a national designation program that recognizes healthcare facilities that demonstrate expertise in delivering quality specialty care — safely, effectively and cost efficiently. Since its inception in 2008, Blue Distinction Specialty Care has aided Blue Cross and Blue Shield members along with their physicians in identifying facilities with a history of quality care. In January, the program expanded to include Blue Distinction Centers+ for Bariatric Surgery, focused on identifying facilities that offer a history of quality bariatric care.
Blue Distinction® Centers (BDC) met overall quality measures for patient safety and outcomes, developed with input from the medical community. Blue Distinction® Centers+ (BDC+) also met cost measures that address consumers' need for affordable health care. Individual outcomes may vary. National criteria is displayed on www.bcbs.com. A Local Blue Plan may require additional criteria for facilities located in its own service area. For details on Local Blue Plan Criteria, a provider’s in-network status, or your own policy’s coverage, contact your Local Blue Plan. Each facility’s cost of care is evaluated using data from its Local Blue Plan. Facilities in CA, ID, NY, PA, and WA may lie in two Local Blue Plans’ areas, resulting in two evaluations for cost of care; and their own Local Blue Plans decide whether one or both cost of care evaluation(s) must meet BDC+ national criteria. Neither Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association nor any Blue Plans are responsible for damages or non-covered charges resulting from Blue Distinction or other provider finder information or care received from Blue Distinction or other providers.
