WILMINGTON – After more than a year of construction and $4.1 million of community support, the new SECU Family House at New Hanover Regional Medical Center will soon begin welcoming patients and families. An open house will be held on Wednesday, November 19 from 3-5:30 p.m. The public is welcome to tour the new facility and witness the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new building.
When families travel to Wilmington for medical care, many need a place to stay and rest while their loved one receives treatment. The SECU Family House at NHRMC will be a relaxing and peaceful place in which patients and families can rest, prepare meals and find the support of staff, volunteers and other guests while they are receiving care at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
“We are the regional referral center for southeastern North Carolina and so many of our patients have traveled a long way from home to receive care here,” said Jack Barto, president and chief executive officer of New Hanover Regional Medical Center. “Thanks to the generous support of the State Employees Credit Union and our community, the expanded facilities at the new SECU Family House at NHRMC will allow us to accommodate more patients and families at a time when they most need the comforts of home.”
Since 1986, the NHRMC Hospitality House has served this need, but that house is outdated and lacks appropriate space and features to adequately address guest needs. So the State Employees Credit Union Foundation generously committed a dollar-for-dollar match up to $2 million for the construction of a new house. The New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation
worked with local businesses and individuals to raise the matching $2.1 million needed for the project.
“The SECU Family House at New Hanover Regional Medical Center is a wonderful project that has the support of nearly two million SECU members who understand the significance and increased need for expanded hospitality house services in the Wilmington medical community,” remarked McKinley Wooten, Jr., SECU Foundation Board Chair. “The new facility will not only carry forth the excellent reputation of the Hospitality House of Wilmington that began over 27 years ago, but will offer even more patients and families a place of refuge with safe, comfortable accommodations and caring support services to help them rest and heal.”
In addition to doubling the number of guest rooms, the new and expanded SECU Family House will provide improved features and benefits including private bathrooms, thermostat controls in each room, peaceful and relaxing communal spaces for families, an outdoor play area for children, and modern safety features.
“The NHRMC Foundation was thrilled to lead the fundraising efforts for the new SECU Family House,” said John Allen, Chair of the NHRMC Foundation Board of Directors. “We are so grateful to State Employees Credit Union and all of those who supported this campaign with their donations, pledges and gifts.”
The NHRMC Auxiliary will operate the facility, providing the staff and operational funding needed to sustain the new house.
New Hanover Regional Medical Center is the leading provider of quality and accessible health care in Southeastern North Carolina, delivering care to all in need, without the support of taxpayer dollars. The medical center takes seriously its responsibility as an economic engine for the community, creating more than 6,000 jobs directly and another 6,000 jobs indirectly.
