WILMINGTON – New Hanover Regional Medical Center has named Sharon Becker, Manager of the Emergency Department at Pender Memorial Hospital
, as its Leader of Excellence for the fourth quarter of 2013. Becker was nominated for her integrity, honesty and accountability.
Since her arrival at Pender Memorial Hospital in December 2010, Becker has made many positive changes that have improved the quality of care for patients. She has added an automated medication dispensing unit, a portable ultrasound machine to help diagnose patients after hours, and has implemented stroke and STEMI heart attack protocols to ensure that these patients receive high quality care to achieve the best possible outcomes. In addition, Becker worked with the NHRMC Foundation to install TVs in patient rooms and start a Pediatric Toy Closet, which provides stuffed animals to help comfort the department’s smallest patients. Becker has also worked to provide more collaboration and training with Pender County EMS. Their departments train together on many of their medical skills. Without a doubt, a strong working relationship between these two departments means better outcomes for patients.
“Sharon has worked hard to ensure that not only does the department provide the highest quality clinical care, but they also provide compassion to the patients and visitors to the department,” said Ruth Glaser, President of Pender Memorial Hospital. “Sharon’s commitment and work ethic have led her to become an expert leader with a generous and caring spirit that instills pride in the nursing profession.”
