The Southeastern Regional Advisory Committee's State Medical Assistance Team (SERAC SMAT) was pleased to assist the Mission of Mercy Dental Clinic this past weekend in giving much-needed free dental care to area residents.
NHRMC is the lead agency for SERAC. The SMAT provided medical assistance and triage for the clinic. Sponsored by the N.C. Dental Health Fund, the Missions of Mercy Dental Program provides free dental services across the state to people who may otherwise have no access to care. The program was first brought to Wilmington seven years ago as a Boy Scout Eagle Project. The SERAC SMAT volunteers have been a partner in this event for the past three years. Together, with local dentists and Cape Fear Community College, the SERAC SMAT volunteers treated and cared for about 800 patients over two days.
