WILMINGTON – A new specialist will be joining the team of highly-trained oncologists in southeastern North Carolina’s only cancer center. Lucybeth Nieves Arriba, M.D., will begin caring for women who need treatment for gynecologic cancers on August 8 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s Zimmer Cancer Center.
“I am so excited to be back in southeastern North Carolina and to have the opportunity to care for women facing cancer,” says Dr. Nieves Arriba. “The staff and physicians at Zimmer Cancer Center are committed to their patients and their work. I look forward to helping expand and advance the services we provide.”
Dr. Nieves Arriba will be joining Walter Gajewski, M.D., of New Hanover Gynecologic Oncology - NHRMC Physician Group. As gynecology oncologists, she and Dr. Gajewski specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of women with cancer of the reproductive organs. The practice provides comprehensive care, from diagnosis to treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy, and post-treatment surveillance. The physicians also help train surgical residents at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
“We are so pleased to have Dr. Nieves Arriba as part of our team,” says Chad Knight, administrator of NHRMC’s Zimmer Cancer Center. “Most community hospitals do not have GYN oncologists on staff because it’s a specialty usually reserved for large academic medical centers. Now women in our community have access to two of these highly-skilled physicians, both of whom are experienced in minimally-invasive surgery, including laparoscopy and robotics.”
Nieves Arriba says she has always been passionate about caring for women. One of the reasons she was drawn to GYN oncology is because it is an opportunity to stay with the patient through all phases of the disease: from diagnosis to surgery to chemotherapy and beyond. GYN oncologists have four years of medical school training, four years of residency in obstetrics and gynecology and a three-to-four year fellowship in gynecology oncology.
“For years, women in southeastern North Carolina have turned to the Zimmer Cancer Center for expert and compassionate care,” said Dr. Gajewski. “As the first female GYN oncologist at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Dr. Nieves Arriba will enhance the level of care these women receive by virtue of her extensive training and her dedication to women’s health.”
Originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico, Dr. Nieves Arriba graduated from the University of Puerto Rico and completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Connecticut. She completed her fellowship in gynecology oncology at The Cleveland Clinic. In addition, Dr. Nieves Arriba achieved a Masters in Public Health from East Carolina University, has worked with underserved women in Mexico and is fluent in Spanish.
