Skilled Nursing Facility at Pender Memorial Hospital earns Five Stars

February 04, 2009
The Skilled Nursing Facility at Pender Memorial Hospital has been awarded an Overall Five-Star Quality Rating by Medicare’s Nursing Home Compare web site, which provides detailed information about every Medicare and Medicaid-certified nursing home in the country.

The website, www.medicare.gov/NHcompare, shows its ratings for nursing homes overall as well as individually for health inspections, staffing and quality measures. Five stars means the nursing home is “much above average.” The PMH Skilled Nursing Facility was the only eligible nursing home within 20 miles of Burgaw to receive a five-star overall score. The 43-bed Skilled Nursing Facility is located on the second floor of Pender Memorial Hospital.

“We’re a nursing home, but we happen to be located inside a full-service hospital,” said Kim Jones, SNF manager. “That means that there’s a primary care physician in-house on a daily basis. There’s an Emergency Department staffed with specialty-trained emergency physicians available 24 hours a day. Plus there are in-house radiology, pharmacy, lab services and all of the rehabilitation services.”

According to the Medicare web site, the Five-Star Quality Rating System was created to help consumers, their families and caregivers compare nursing homes more easily and help identify areas about which individuals may want to ask questions. The rating system is based on continued efforts as a result of the Omnibus Reconciliation Act of 1987 (OBRA '87), a nursing home reform law, and more recent quality improvement campaigns such as the Advancing Excellence in America’s Nursing Homes. Scores from health inspections and data regarding staffing and other quality measures are combined to calculate an overall rating.

The nursing homes that are shown on Nursing Home Compare site are certified to participate in Medicare and/or Medicaid and provide a level of care called “skilled” care. That means that skilled nursing or rehabilitation staff is needed to manage, observe or evaluate the individual’s care. There may be licensed nursing homes that are not included on Nursing Home Compare if they provide other levels of nursing services or if they are not certified to participate in Medicare or Medicaid.

“The Skilled Nursing Unit at Pender Memorial Hospital strives to provide a safe environment and five-star-quality care for our residents 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,” said David Long, administrator at Pender Memorial Hospital. “We are proud of this ranking and of all of our staff who work together to provide such excellent care for our residents.”

The Five Star Quality Rating System is not a substitute for visiting a nursing home personally before choosing a facility for your loved one.
