NHRMC and local physicians work together to improve health care accessA quick glance at the newly constructed, 17,390-square-foot Atlantic Surgicenter off Market Street in Porters Neck, and it becomes as clear as the Loblolly Pines that tower nearby: With help from New Hanover Regional Medical Center a whole new generation of same-day surgical care has taken root along the countryside, one offering unprecedented access to a variety of outpatient surgical procedures in a relaxed, state-of-the-art facility that's conveniently located. With a dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting held Sept. 20, Atlantic Surgicenter (ASC) debuted as the tri-county's premier same-day surgery center, providing Lower Cape Fear residents a health care option that's already fast become a statewide model for future public and private medical partnerships. "This is the first joint venture between New Hanover Regional Medical Center and a large portion of the Wilmington medical community," said Donna Bost, VP of Clinical Support at NHRMC and ASC board member. "It makes sense that physicians bring the medical expertise to the relationship, and the hospital can bring organizational experience to create a high-quality, efficient provider of services." A partnership between NHRMC and a doctor's group called Wilmington Physicians, ASC, at $6.6 million, is the culmination of three year's work between the two parties. ASC was founded in part because of the region's recent spike in outpatient surgical procedures - a 15 percent increase between 2002 and 2006. "It has been an extremely rewarding process, one that will surely benefit patients throughout the region and beyond," said Dr. Hormoze Goudarzi, a Wilmington physician and ASC board member. The facility is home to four spacious operating rooms with expansive pre- and post-operative staging areas providing the most in patient privacy and comfort. A side door exiting onto a covered portico for easy pick-up after discharge assures the utmost discretion for patients. Surgeries performed at the fully licensed and accredited facility do not require hospital admission and are concentrated in the following specialties: General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Ear, Nose & Throat, Plastic Surgery, Urology, Gynecology, Gastroenterology, and Pain Management. Atlantic Surgicenter is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment including the BrainLAB navigation system, which uses real-time 3-D imaging technology to guide surgeons through the most complex ear, nose and throat (ENT) procedures. “This partnership with NHRMC represents a new era of health care in Southeastern North Carolina," said Dr. Ellis Tinsley Jr., a Wilmington physician and ASC board member. “The greatest benefit, however, will be to our patients, who will receive cutting edge health care closer to home.” When ASC begins taking patients Oct. 30, it will boast a staff of 35 employees, most of them registered nurses with tens of thousands of hours of combined experience between them. The center expects to perform just over 7,000 surgical procedures in its first year of operation. NHRMC President and CEO Jack Barto described the founding of ASC as a pioneering achievement, one that will address the ever-growing health care needs of a region that in some cases has seen double-digit growth over the past decade. “This is a wonderful opportunity for the hospital to work together with these physicians to bring health care closer to the community,” he said.
