The New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation has received a gift of $2.1 million from the Dan Cameron Family Foundation, the largest cash contribution in the organization’s 16-year history. In recognition of this generous contribution, the medical center’s new women’s and children’s hospital will carry the name of Betty H. Cameron.

“On behalf of the Dan Cameron Family Foundation, we are pleased to make this contribution in honor of our mother,” said Bill H. Cameron, one of five children of Dan and Betty Cameron.

“She has spent her entire life helping this community and getting involved in many women’s and children's issues. She and my father have always been big believers in people, never distinguishing in background, religion or color. The Betty H. Cameron Women’s and Children’s Hospital will serve the community with those same core values. She is honored to have her name on this facility, and all of her children are proud to help make it happen.”

Mr. Cameron is joined by his four siblings in making this contribution possible. They include Mrs. Swanna C. Saltiel of Ann Arbor, MI; Ms. Charlotte A. Cameron of McLean, VA; Mrs. Hilda C. Dill of Wilmington, NC; and Mr. Daniel D. Cameron, Jr. who currently resides in Mexico.

Jack Barto, president and CEO of New Hanover Regional, praised the Cameron family for its continued support of the medical center.

“Dedicating the women’s and children’s hospital to Mrs. Cameron is a wonderful tribute,” he said. “Her family’s generosity will enhance the day-to-day care provided by the excellent medical professionals in this facility.”

When it opens in July of 2008, the Betty H. Cameron Women’s and Children’s Hospital will be the first of its kind in the region. The $58 million, 149-bed facility is currently under construction in front of the medical center.

Services will include a six-bed pediatric intensive care unit, which will become the basis of a pediatric critical care and surgery program that will close a gap in medical services in the region. Parents of critically ill children will no longer have to arrange transportation and overnight lodging in hospitals hours away.

The Betty H. Cameron Women’s and Children’s Hospital will feature all private rooms, including the neonatal and pediatric intensive care units. It will also feature family areas for siblings to play or families to relax between visits, and it will also have its own gift shop, women’s boutique and concession area.

The NHRMC Foundation has launched a capital campaign entitled “Our Health, Our Hospital, Our Future” to support the vision of the medical center as it responds to the growing health care needs of the community. To date, the campaign has realized $4.1 million in support towards its goal of $7 million, including the Cameron's gift as well as gifts from the NHRMC Board of Trustees, Foundation Board of Directors, NHRMC Auxiliary, employees and some community leaders.

“We are thrilled to receive this gift from the Cameron family,” said Bill Rudisill, campaign Chairman. “It will give us tremendous momentum toward reaching our $7 million goal. The Camerons have always been active in this community. It’s fitting that Betty H. Cameron’s name will be on the new women’s and children’s hospital.”

The Betty H. Cameron Women’s and Children’s Hospital is part of a $221 million Master Facilities Plan approved by the NHRMC Board of Trustees in August of 2005. It also includes the new Surgical Pavilion, as well as the renovation of the patient tower.
