Pender Memorial Hospital and Pender Home Health have earned preliminary accreditation by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) following a thorough, unannounced, on-site survey of both facilities on Nov. 13-15. The hospital and home health agency received the Gold Seal of Approval™ by demonstrating compliance with JCAHO’s rigorous national standards for health care quality and patient safety. Official notification is expected within the next 10 business days.
“We sought accreditation for our hospital because we want to demonstrate our commitment to our patients, their safety and the quality of care they receive,” said Matt Mendez, administrator at PMH. “We view obtaining JCHAO accreditation as another step toward our goal of achieving excellence everyday.”
The award of accreditation for the hospital and home health agency is for a three-year period ending November 2009. Earlier this year, the laboratory at Pender Memorial was fully accredited by JCAHO for a two-year period through April 2008. This accreditation award excludes the PMH skilled nursing facility, which is surveyed by the Department of Facilities Services annually.
JCAHO surveyors may return unannounced at any time during the three-year accreditation cycle to ensure that the organization is complying with the set standards continuously. The Joint Commission is an independent, not-for-profit organization that serves as the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care.
“Pender Memorial Hospital strives to provide a safe environment and high-quality care for every patient and visitor who comes through our doors,” said Mendez. “It’s not just a matter of meeting these standards while a surveyor is watching. It is a constant and everyday expectation of our staff.”
Pender Memorial Hospital, an affiliate of New Hanover Regional Medical Center, has been serving Pender County and the surrounding areas since 1951. Pender Home Health is a home-care agency that serves an eight-county radius in southeastern NC.
