A Time to Give

November 20, 2006
Sometimes it takes a particularly hard experience to know how much you have to be thankful for. For CeCe and Rudy Smithwick, that experience came in April 1999, when their twin girls were born prematurely. The fragile newborns spent two months in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. “Until you see that infant in the NICU, you don’t have a true understanding,” said Mrs. Smithwick. “After that, we knew we wanted to give back.” The Smithwicks not only became donors to the NHRMC Foundation, they became volunteers. They have made themselves available to talk to families who have babies in the NICU and Mrs. Smithwick helps lead the coordination of the Foundation Gala. “We’re blessed and we need to bless others,” she said. “We’re encouraging others to do the same.” Giving to the medical center Foundation means giving to all the families who will rely on the medical center for their medical care. Donations may be made to a particular area, like children’s services, or to a general account that will help fund projects as needed. The Foundation also provides a way for donors to make tribute gifts in honor of someone special or in memory of a loved one. The Foundation will send a holiday card acknowledging the gift to the person in whose name the gift was given or to that person’s family. “A tribute gift is a wonderful way to celebrate the holiday season and know that your gift will continue to support the mission of New Hanover Regional Medical Center throughout the New Year,” said Aline Lasseter, NHRMC Foundation’s executive director.

Ways to Give

If you are interested in supporting the continuing improvement of health care services in Southeastern North Carolina, please consider the following options. The NHRMC Foundation recommends consulting with a financial advisor, CPA or attorney for expert advice on what type of gift may be the best for you and your family. Gifts of cash or check – A gift by check is the simplest and most convenient way to support the programs and services you care about. If you wish for your gift to make an even larger impact, you may pledge it over a period of up to five years. Appreciated assets – A gift of appreciated assets such as stocks and bonds, that have been held for one year and a day, can provide not only an easy way to make a gift without interrupting your cash flow but provide attractive tax advantages as well. Gifts of Real Estate – Gifts of commercial or residential real estate to the NHRMC Foundation may enable you and your family to provide a much larger gift than you may have originally thought possible. A life income gift – You may also consider a gift to the NHRMC Foundation that enables you and/or your spouse to receive an income for life through a charitable remainder trust (CRT.) Gifts of life insurance – There are two ways to use insurance in your gift plans. You may simply change the name of the owner and beneficiary to NHRMC Foundation of paid-up policies you no longer need or you may name NHRMC Foundation the owner and beneficiary of a new policy and make the annual payments to the Foundation equal to the premium. Estate gifts – One of the most meaningful ways you can support the mission and vision of New Hanover Regional Medical Center is a gift from your will or estate plan. An estate gift, coupled with other gift instruments, often enables you to provide a naming opportunity for your family in the Medical Center. As the holidays draw near, put the NHRMC Foundation on your shopping list. Whether a gift is cash, stocks, or a bequest, what’s important is that you know your gift has made a positive impact on the lives of the patients served everyday at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
