At its board meeting Monday evening, Dosher Memorial Hospital voted unanimously to approve a partnership with New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
The decision comes after Dosher’s request and consideration of partnership proposals from both NHRMC and Novant, the current operator of Brunswick Community Hospital.
Dosher has been seeking partnership with a larger medical facility as part of its strategic plan, believing a larger hospital will bring some services and specialties that will bolster its own ability to remain a thriving community hospital serving the residents of Southport, Smithville Township and Brunswick County.
“We’re honored to have been chosen as Dosher’s partner,” said CEO Jack Barto, “and believe this partnership is an opportunity for us to help them continue providing top-quality services to their residents close to home. This also fits our strategic plan to strengthen the services we provide in Brunswick County.”
The relationship is not a merger or a management agreement, but is a way Dosher can have access to advanced technologies and specialty services for its patients while building its own identity as a strong, viable community hospital.
Some elements of the partnership include:
Opening joint satellite medical centers for convenient points of access
Offering a seamless system of transfer for tertiary care patients
Basing a dedicated VitaLink unit at Dosher
Sharing expenses and resources for primary care and specialty physician recruitment
Saving 20 percent, or $300,000 annually, from purchasing medical supplies and equipment through NHRMC’s group purchasing contracts
Potentially sharing NHRMC’s hospitalists for inpatients to provide relief to Dosher’s primary care physicians
Providing joint outreach services, such as screenings, education, health fairs and support groups to the community
NHRMC already cares for more than 50 percent of Brunswick County’s hospital patients and is committed to continuing that care. Dosher, a 100-bed hospital - 36 inpatient and 64 skilled nursing beds - has been serving its community for more than 75 years and has enjoyed a friendly and positive working relationship with New Hanover Regional.
“Being chosen to expand on the positive relationship we’ve always had is an affirmation of the quality work being done by the staff, physicians and volunteers at New Hanover Regional everyday,” said Mr. Barto. “We’re excited for the opportunity to work with Dosher and improve health care in Southeastern North Carolina.”
