A Half Century of Health & Healing

Since opening its doors to on June 14, 1967, New Hanover Regional Medical Center has been a leader in our community. The arrival of seven tiny, prematurely born infants in cardboard cradles - our first patients - marked the merger of two hospitals into one facility committed to treating everyone regardless of race, creed, national origin or ability to pay.

A New Mission With the Same Purpose

From our humble beginnings as a homegrown hospital, NHRMC has grown to become a leader in quality patient care. Our hospital has been recognized nationally for our advanced, patient-centered care.

However, our greatest accomplishment is in the lives we have touched. Your stories have built our legacy - the reason we strive for excellence and remain committed to our mission of Leading Our Community to Outstanding Health.

With Gratitude to Our Patients, Physicians, Employees & Volunteers

Thank you for being part of our story for 50 years. We are honored to have earned your trust and confidence and are grateful to you for allowing us to be part of your lives. We look forward to building a future of continued excellence with you as our inspiration.

From Our CEO

John HeadshotFifty years ago, the opening of New Hanover Memorial Hospital marked a bold step forward for Wilmington and New Hanover County. The integration of our hospital was a civil rights achievement during a time of turmoil and unrest.

Since then, the hospital has grown into New Hanover Regional Medical Center, an organization that continues to lead our thriving community in financial strength, civic partnership, and above all, health and wellness.

Our organization’s new mission statement, “Leading Our Community to Outstanding Health,” highlights our commitment to the people of southeastern North Carolina.

As New Hanover County’s largest employer, we are poised – with the help of our regional partners – to improve the health of the people in our communities. On the facing page, you’ll see that our organization has earned honors and awards that recognize our commitment to excellence. We encourage our employees to earn certifications and acquire specialized training that perpetuates our cycle of continuous improvement. The decisions we make are guided by Lean principles that encourage involvement from everyone involved in the process – including our staff, volunteers, community partners, and most importantly, our valued patients and their families.

Our growing team of talented physicians and medical staff provide excellent care and play an increasingly prominent role in making decisions about the processes we use to treat patients and determining what new services would be most beneficial to our community.

New Hanover Regional Medical Center exists to serve the people of our community, whether they need help from a provider in the NHRMC Physician Group, a screening for cancer, immediate emergency care, or rehabilitation so they can return to independent living at home.

But that’s not all. Our commitment does not start or stop when a patient walks through our doors. In some cases, we deliver health care right to a patient’s front door through NHRMC Home Care or our groundbreaking NHRMC Community Paramedicine program. At NHRMC, we also strive to engage community members who have never received care from NHRMC. As we promote health education, awareness and preventive medicine, we are working to fulfill our role of Leading Our Community to Outstanding Health.

Over the past 50 years, our community members have learned to rely on NHRMC to deliver excellent health care. We are honored to have earned your trust and confidence. As health care continues to change, we will continue to work diligently to help our community members live healthier lives.
