Weight Loss Surgery

Recent obesity statistics are alarming.  40 million Americans are obese, which equates to approximately 30% of our population.  Co-morbid factors that accompany obesity are on the rise as well.  High blood pressure, hypercholesterolemia, dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, and sleep apnea are some of the conditions that increase with obesity.

The U.S. National Institutes of Health recommends bariatric surgery for obese people with a body mass index (BMI) of at least 40, and for people with BMI 35 and serious coexisting medical conditions such as diabetes.

Since 2003, New Hanover Regional Medical Center has performed over 2,000 bariatric procedures.  We have been cited as an American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS) Bariatric Center of Excellence, Medicare Bariatric Center of Excellence,  NC Blue Cross Bariatric Center of Distinction, OptumHealth Bariatric Center of Excellence, and a Cigna Bariatric Center of Excellence.  These designations are given to bariatric programs that have low 30 day complication rates, adequate post-operative follow-up, and specific pathways that allow for postive outcomes.

To date, the three NHRMC bariatric surgeons perform Gastric Bypass, Gastric Sleeve, and Gastric Banding.

If you are a candidate, you and your surgeon will make the decision as to the best procedure for your BMI, co-morbidities, and lifestyle.  Click here to submit your questions regarding NHRMC bariatric surgeons or for a physician referral.
