NHRMC Weight Transitions Program Top
Investment for Local Real Estate Agent

“The staff are here waiting for you, ready to advise and motivate you wherever you are in your weight loss journey. Many times they’ll work out right next to you. That’s what keeps you coming back."

Alison Keller,
NHRMC Weight

Inside the Cardiac Rehabilitation exercise facility at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, a lunchtime lull has descended. Treadmills, stationary bikes and elliptical machines stand sentry-like, immobile – a quick breather before another highly motivated group of runners, pedalers and climbers seeking a healthier lifestyle appears.

One of them, local real estate agent Alison Keller, sits waiting, head and eyes straightforward like an athlete who’s just heard the halftime whistle and can’t wait to get back in the game. Here, however, wins or losses aren’t measured in goals or baskets, but in pounds shed.

“It all just kinda caught up with me – the births of my three children, the demands of my job, the fast food – and before I knew it I’d put on the extra weight,” says the thirty-seven-year-old former college soccer player and current Weight Transitions participant.

A comprehensive weight management program for persons needing weight loss assistance, NHRMC’s Weight Transitions program helps individuals make healthy lifestyle changes so they can lose weight and keep it off for good. Begun in 2006 and open to those with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater, the program is supervised by registered dietitians and exercise physiologists at NHRMC’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Center.

“I’d tried the local gyms,” she says, “but I felt more like a number, and my motivation just wasn’t there. Still, I knew I had to get the weight off, and when I read about Weight Transitions in Health

Essentials, it sounded like the program for me.” Keller has her routine down pat: Three times a week on her lunch hour she pulls a Superman - one minute a designer suit-wearing real estate agent, the next a health and fitness devotee in knee-length shorts, a V-neck tee and running shoes. An hour-long, customized fat-burning cardiovascular and weight training routine follows: Run, bike, row, back to running, row again, then finish with multiple sets of double-digit reps on the cable weight machine.

“I feel accountable here – that’s the biggest difference,” she says, as others in sweat suits, shorts and running shoes begin filling the room.

And come back she has – it’ll be a year in February – for a total weight loss of 32 lbs. “And the important thing is I’m keeping it off. The help I needed wasn’t only with exercising but in learning about good nutrition and lifestyle management. They do all of that here, and that’s important for anyone looking for long-term weight loss.”

“Ready for the best workout of your life, Alison?” shouts a voice with a chart and stethoscope, as M.C. Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This” kicks in overhead.

Keller laughs aloud, pulls her long brown pony tail tight and with her game face on strides confidently into a sea of spinning wheels, whirring conveyors and gliding weights.

Weight Transitions has changed my life,” she says. “I feel amazing.”
