New oncologist now seeing patients at NHRMC Zimmer Cancer Center 01/27/2011 WILMINGTON – Patients in Southeastern North Carolina have another ally in the fight against cancer. Andrew Schreiber, M.D., has just joined New Hanover Oncology - NHRMC Physician Group and is now seeing patients at New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s Zimmer Cancer Center.
Schreiber is board certified in both hematology, the treatment of malignant and benign disorders of the blood, and oncology, the treatment of cancer. It is a specialty that is very personal to Dr. Schreiber.
“My mom was diagnosed with a type of chronic leukemia several years ago,” says Schreiber. “I just started my residency when it happened, but watching her go through that experience is what drew me to this field.”
Dr. Schreiber did his undergraduate work at the University of Georgia in Athens and went to medical school at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in Greenville. In addition, he completed his residency at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte and his fellowship in hematology/oncology at the University of Tennessee in Memphis.
“We are delighted that Dr. Schreiber has joined our team,” says Chad Knight, administrator of the NHRMC Zimmer Cancer Center. “He is passionate about practicing medicine and about the relationships he builds with his patients. Dr. Schreiber will be a valuable asset to the community.”
The Zimmer Cancer Center is Southeastern North Carolina's only community cancer center dedicated solely to the diagnosis, treatment and support of people with cancer. The team offers outpatient services, including chemotherapy, infusion therapy and radiation therapies. They also oversee New Hanover Regional Medical Center's clinical trials program, giving local residents a chance to participate in national treatment studies. The oncology program at the NHRMC Zimmer Cancer Center is certified as a teaching cancer hospital by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.
