Learn to better manage your diabetes through free classes 01/03/2011 WILMINGTON – New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Pender Memorial Hospital and the Diabetes Bus Initiative are offering free classes to help diabetics better manage their condition. The classes are taught by certified diabetes educators. The three-part series will focus on how to manage blood glucose levels through monitoring and choosing appropriate foods as well as how to prevent diabetes from affecting feet, eyes, kidneys and heart health.
The classes are based on a model developed by The Diabetes Bus Initiative® that promotes a comfortable rapport and uses a non-threatening approach to diabetes self-management. The curriculum incorporates practical diabetes skills, lifestyle goals that measurably impact diabetes outcomes, and peer support that empowers attendees as they learn together as a group.
The next class at New Hanover Regional Medical Center begins January 11. New classes begin each month and are also available at Pender Memorial Hospital. Physician referral is required. For more information, visit www.thediabetesbus.org or call toll-free 877.781.6664.
