Volunteer Placements

New Hanover Regional Medical Center volunteers work throughout the network, performing a wide range of services.  The following is a list of the areas in which a volunteer could be placed and the job they would perform there.


Ambassador/NHRMC - Greet patients, visitors and staff, give verbal directions or escort to destination when possible, provides wheelchair transport when appropriate.

Auxiliary Service/NHRMC  - Transport discharged patients, perform miscellaneous errands, such as, delivering flowers, snacks, medical records, mail, e-mail, newspapers and collecting charts.

Business Center/NHRMC - Answer phone and direct those entering the building.

Cameron Women's & Children's (CWC)  Ante-Partum - Provides social stimulation and creative activities/outlets for high risk obstetrics patients.

CWC Discharge Room - Transport discharged patients, deliver flowers, gifts, newspapers, mail and e-mail to patient rooms.

CWC Front Desk - Answer phone, give directions throughout the building as well as into other areas and provide computer-based patient information in compliance with HIPAA guidelines.  Escort new pediatric patients to the unit and offer assistance to those going to Labor & Delivery.

CWC Neonatal Intensive Care Unit - Provide staff assistance in NICU, including stocking shelves with supplies, wiping down rooms and running errands. From time-to-time be available to hold crying babies.

CWC Specialty Clinics - Check patients in, copy insurance information, collect patient information and inform staff of patient arrival.  Call patients to remind of future appointments and assist with clerical duties.

Courtesy Van Drivers/NHRMC - Provide customer service by transporting visitors, patients and hospital staff throughout campus and to hospital buildings and doctors' offices in immediate vicinity of NHRMC. 

Emergency Room Volunteers/CF & NHRMC - Serve as a liaison between staff and the patient's family and friends. Assists staff by helping to make those waiting as comfortable as possible.

Foundation Office - Place thank-you phone calls to donors, assemble pink ribbon packs, assist with collating and distributing materials, place foundation brochures throughout NHRMC campus.

Front Desk/CF & NHRMC - Answer telephone, give directions throughout the facilities and provide computer-based patient information in compliance with HIPAA guidelines.

Gift Shops/CF & NHRMC -Assist staff by helping with retail sales, displays and wrapping gifts as requested.

Golf Carts/CF & NHRMC - Drive golf cart throughout all visitor parking areas, offering rides to main door then from main door to parking area.

Hospitality House - Answer phones and relay messages to guests/staff. Check in guests, give tours and explain policies to new guests. Provide assistance to guests and staff as needed. 

ICU Hallway/NHRMC - Greet patients, visitors and staff. Provide general information, directions and support to visitors and families in the Intensive Care Areas.

ICU Main Lobby/NHRMC - Greet visitors and staff, provide computer-based patient information following HIPAA guidelines. Escort visitors/family members to various ICU areas as necessary.

Joint Camp/CF - Assist staff transporting patients to group physical therapy, provide assistance during session and distribute food and beverages.

Kangaroo Kapers/NHRMC - Facilitator - Oversees class for children ages 3-8 who are about to become a big brother or sister (twice monthly).

Kangaroo Kapers/NHRMC - Assistant - Hands-on help with children, distribution of materials, etc. Assist facilitator as directed.

Medical Mall Guest Greeter - Greet patients, visitors and staff.  Provide general information and complete light clerical duties as necessary.

Medical Records Transport - Transport records throughout the main hospital buildings as needed.

Office Resource Volunteers/CF and NHRMC - Answer phone, take messages, help with data entry and clerical duties. Provide general office support for the department of Volunteer Services.

Patient Advocate Liaison-PAL/NHRMC - Specially selected/trained volunteers work closely with and under the direction of unit nurse manager providing bedside support to patients. Reports needs/requests to Nurse, unit manager or NH PAL office.

Patient Advocate Liaison Office Assistant - Listen to voice mail, call back patient or family member to clarify complaint or compliment. Accurately record all information and pass it to the staff Patient Advocate. Computer data entry and strong telephone/customer service skills. 

Patient Representative/CF - Specially selected/trained volunteers visit patients throughout the hospital as requested by nursing staff.  Report patient's needs or specific requests to nurse, unit manager or CF PAL office.

Pet Therapy Program/NHRMC -  Volunteer and dog must meet and follow certain criteria to perform this duty. Work directly with Healing Arts program coordinator. Visit in specific patient areas with dog, closely following all procedures.

Pre-admission Packets/CF and NHRMC - Assemble charts and pre-admission packets for the hospital.

Rehabilitation Hospital/NHRMC - Assist staff by transporting patients to therapy, assist and observe during therapy sessions, change sheets and pillows between sessions. 

Rehabilitation Outpatient Services/NHRMC -  Greet patients, alert therapist of patient arrival, answer phone, take messages, assist with light clerical work. Specific to various therapies (occupational, speech, physical, recreation, etc). 

Spanish Translators/CF and NHRMC - Perform under the direction of the lead Spanish translator. May work directly with translators in response to calls throughout the hospital, or may be unit based, depending on needs of hospital.

Surgical Waiting Room/CF - This is a desk position, requiring the volunteer to act as liaison between the operating room/recovery room and the patient's family and friends.

Surgical Pavilion/NHRMC - Ambassador - Escort patient and/or patient family to appropriate destination.  Explain pager, tracking board, and what the family can expect throughout the day.

Surgical Pavilion/NHRMC - Station I - Assist staff at this desk by answering phone, paging families, making notes on surgical schedule, giving verbal directions and providing customer service by interacting with anxious families and friends.

Surgical Pavilion/NHRMC - Station II - Accurately record all patient updates, walk families to pre- or post-op rooms, place families in appropriate surgeon consult room, take messages and provide information.

Surgical Pavilion/NHRMC - Transporters - Transport patients upon discharge via wheelchair to the front discharge area.

Volunteer Nurse/CF and NHRMC - This position requires a current NC nursing license and CPR certification, nurses are assigned to areas of expertise, or interest, for a minimum 4-6 hour shift per week. Volunteer RNs also support the hospital and Volunteer Services Department by providing flu shots and TB tests during times of need (Flu outbreak/Education Week, etc).

Wings/CF - Transports patients upon discharge via wheelchair to the front discharge area as requested.

Zimmer Cancer Center Reception - Greet and direct patients in the Zimmer Cancer Center to appropriate treatment area. Assist front desk staff in managing incoming patients. Round on those in waiting room to provide updates and answer questions. Make coffee and keep waiting room neat and cheerful. From time to time, place stickers on charts, assist with filing and other office duties.

Zimmer Cancer Center Patient Assistance/NHRMC  - Visit patients in chemotherapy room, providing snacks as directed by staff. Help patients pass time during chemo treatment by bringing magazines or visiting. Get mail from mailroom and snacks from cafeteria as directed.
