Progressive Care Unit
Patient Population and Complexity of Care
The inpatient intermediate care unit (PCU) of New Hanover Regional Medical Center provides 24 hour continuous, comprehensive nursing care to an acute medical-surgical patient population. The patient population on PCU includes adults through the geriatric life span of development who are stable but have complex needs and require more comprehensive care. An interdisciplinary health team reviews the patients' progress in daily patient care conferences.
The professional staff of nursing personnel on PCU includes RNs and LPNs who are competent to provide care within the scope of their professional practice. Telemetry Techs/Unit Clerks (UCs), Nursing Assistants (NAs) and Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) complete the nursing staff complement of the unit.
Other members of the interdisciplinary health team include Case Managers, Social Workers, Respiratory Therapists, Rehabilitation Therapists (ST, OT, PT) and Physicians.
The average nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:3 patients on step-down and 1:5 patients on medical telemetry for the 24-hour continuum of care. The amount of staff maintained on the schedule is reflective of projected patient census and acuity. Daily staffing level and assignments are adjusted according to variances in patient volume, acuity and special patient care needs.
Qualifications of Personnel
