Patient Population and Complexity of Care

The inpatient NHRMC Diabetes unit provides 24 hour continuous, comprehensive nursing care for the medical-surgical and diabetic patient population. The patient population on NHMRC Diabetes includes adults through the geriatric life span of development who are stable and have complex needs and require diabetic education.

Staffing

Nursing personnel providing care to patients on Diabetes include a professional staff (RNs and LPNs) that are competent to provide care within the scope of their professional practice.  Unit Clerks (UCs), Nursing Assistants (NAs) and Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) complete the nursing staff complement of the unit. 

Other members of the interdisciplinary health team includes Certified Diabetes Educators, Case Managers, Social Workers, Respiratory Therapists, Rehabiltation Therapists (ST, OT, PT), Pharmacists, Nutritionists and the Physicians.

The average nurse patient ratio is 1:5. The amount of staff maintained on the schedule is reflective of projected patient census and acuity. Daily staffing level and assignments are adjusted according to variances in patient volume, acuity and special patient care needs.

Qualifications of Personnel

Registered nurses possess specialized training, knowledge and skills as reflected in the NC Nurse Practice Act.  All nurses maintain a current license in the state of North Carolina and certification in BCLS as well as documented annual competencies. The nurses have completed competencies for DKA monitoring. The staff has received much recognition for their proactive approach as advocates for their patient care.
