Patient Population and Complexity of Care
The inpatient surgery/ urology floor at New Hanover Regional Medical Center provides 24 hour continuous, comprehensive nursing care to the post-operative medical-surgical patient population. The patient population on the 9th floor includes a combination of gastrointestinal, abdominal, thoracic, vascular, and genitourinary patients. The population varies to include post-op patients requiring telemetry monitoring. Our focus is the progression of patients to their optimal level of healing.
Nursing personnel providing care to patients on 9th floor includes a professional staff (RNs and LPNs) that are competent to provide care within the scope of their professional practice. Unit Clerks (UCs), Nursing Assistants (NAs) and Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) complete the nursing staff complement of the floor.
Other members of the interdisciplinary health team include Case Managers, Social Workers, Respiratory Therapists, Rehabilitation Therapists (ST, OT, PT) and the Physicians.
The average nurse patient ratio is 1:5 patients for the 24-hour continuum of care. The amount of staff maintained on the schedule is reflective of projected patient census and acuity. Daily staffing level and assignments are adjusted according to variances in patient volume, acuity and special patient care needs.
