Pink Ribbon Bags
A diagnosis of cancer can bring a flood of questions and issues. Getting through the treatment requires more than just medicine and/or surgery.
To help, local volunteers Ali Barnard and Janie Lambeth came up with the idea of giving gift bags to women newly diagnosed with cancer. The bags contain items Ms. Barnar d found helpful when she was going through cancer treatment. They include inspirational materials, crayons and pens for expressing thoughts, a satin pillowcase for comfort after hair loss, skin care tips, and the book, Love, Medicine and Miracles, by Bernie Siegel, M.D.
The bags are funded by donations through the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation. Since 1998, more than 3,250 patients have received one.
