But for tens of thousands of women with breast cancer nationwide, *October is all about pink.* That’s because October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and since 1993 the "pink ribbon" has symbolized the fight against a disease that last year alone was expected to claim more than 40,000 lives. Today’s Health Essentials begins Part One in a two-part series featuring four women either directly or indirectly impacted by breast cancer. Their stories are compelling, the details of their suffering – vanquished only by the will to endure and survive - unforgettable. Most important, each of these women has found a unique way to enhance their own healing, self-care and awareness, while educating and empowering others who someday may face similar plights in the fight against one of the most common cancers affecting American women today. Breast Cancer Blog To hear 36-year-old Heather Thornton mention the phrase "using technology to leverage communication" in the context of New Hanover Regional Medical Center probably wouldn’t surprise. After all, as a manager in NHRMC’s Information Services, Thornton is the go-to girl for a wide range of complex technology issues.

	Carrie McIntyre Jacobs The Voice of Breast Cancer By her own admission, Carrie McIntyre Jacobs likes to work a room. "And when I finish with the folks inside, I like to move to the folks outside," she says, standing next to her big black Mercedes sedan on the edge of the New Hanover Regional Medical Center campus. At six feet tall with hazel-brown eyes and impeccably dressed – "the brighter, the better," she says – Jacobs, 55, oozes strength, faith and confidence, all characteristics that - along with expert help from NHRMC’s Zimmer Cancer Center – have no doubt played a part in her breast cancer recovery. - continued here
