Awards and Recognition

New Hanover Regional Medical Center programs and services are often recognized for the level of care they provide and the standards they set. Below is a partial listing of the awards and recognition our programs have received in recent years:

A Top Hospital Statewide, Nationally 

In 2014, U.S. News & World Report ranked New Hanover Regional Medical Center among the Best Hospitals in North Carolina and the Coastal Plain area for the third year in a row. NHRMC was also recognized as high-performing in several areas: cardiology and heart surgery, gastroenterology, orthopedics and pulmonology.

iVantage Health Analytics ranks NHRMC as one of the  2014 HealthStrong™ Hospitals in the United States according to the Hospital Strength Index™ study. HealthStrong hospitals represent the nation’s strongest performing institutions and set benchmarks for optimal population demand, operational and clinical outcomes and financial performance. 

NHRMC Physician Group

New Hanover Medical Group, one of the NHRMC Physician Group practices, was recognized by the National Committee on Quality Assurance (NCQA) for its success in creating a centralized “medical home” for patient care. The recognition, called the Physician Practice Connections©–Patient-Centered Medical Home™ was developed to assess whether physician practices are functioning as medical homes and recognize them for these efforts in their approach to patient care.  

Providers with New Hanover Medical Group and Morgan Internal Medicine have been recognized by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and the American Diabetes Association for providing quality care to patients with diabetes. The recognition was designed to improve the quality of care received by patients with diabetes by recognizing clinicians who deliver quality diabetes care.

Cape Fear Cancer Specialists, another practice in the NHRMC Physician Group, was recognized by the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®), an affiliate of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The national organization certifies oncologiy practices for meeting the highest standards of patient care.

Heart Center

New Hanover Regional Medical Center has received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes the NHRMC Heart Center for its commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients that effectively improves the survival and care of STEMI (ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction) patients. 

NHRMC Orthopedic Hospital

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) has named New Hanover Regional Medical Center Orthopedic Hospital as a Blue Distinction Center+ in Knee and Hip Replacements. The Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care® program is a national designation awarded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans to medical facilities that have proven success in delivering quality care in key treatment areas, including outcomes for patients, with lower rates of complications and readmissions than their peers and cost efficiency.

Zimmer Cancer Center

In 2012, New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s Zimmer Cancer Center was granted the Outstanding Achievement Award by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons. The award recognizes cancer programs that achieve excellence in quality care for cancer patients. It was presented to a select group of only 106 currently accredited and newly accredited cancer programs across the United States. In May 2008, the Zimmer Cancer Center was re-approved as a Teaching Hospital Cancer Program by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.  Only 25 percent of hospitals in the United States have cancer programs approved by the Commission on Cancer. 

Betty H. Cameron Women’s & Children’s Hospital

The Betty H. Cameron Women's & Children's Hospital at New Hanover Regional Medical Center was the recipient in fall 2011 of the Studer Excellence in Patient Care Award, marking the second time it has received this award.  Presented by a nationally recognized healthcare consulting firm, the award recognizes facilities for outstanding achievement in areas of patient safety and quality care.

NC Prevention Partners Triple Gold Awards

New Hanover Regional Medical Center was recognized by NC Prevention Partners for providing the highest standard of excellence for comprehensive wellness programs offered to their employees in the areas of physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco-free environments. Hospitals receiving these acknowledgments are considered Gold Medal, Gold Apple, and Gold Star Standard Hospitals respectively. New Hanover Regional Medical Center is the first hospital in North Carolina to earn all three gold awards. New Hanover Regional Medical Center has also been named by NC Prevention Partners as a Center of Excellence in worksite wellness programs.

Bariatric Program

In 2014, the American Society of Bariatric Surgery re-designated New Hanover Regional Medical Center as a Bariatric Center of Excellence, meaning that NHRMC has demonstrated its commitment to providing multidisciplinary, high-quality, patient-centered care. Blue Cross Blue Shield has also designated NHRMC as a Blue Distinction Center for bariatric surgery.

Emergency Services 

New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s EMS and AirLink VitaLink Critical Care Transport teams each earned the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline EMS Recognition Award in 2014 for their success in implementing and achieving specific quality measures for the treatment of patients who suffer a severe heart attack known as a STEMI. NHRMC’s transport teams were among the first in the nation to achieve this recognition, and AirLink VitaLink is the only critical care team in North Carolina and one of two flight programs in the country to receive the award.

NHRMC Stroke Program

New Hanover Regional Medical Center's Stroke Program received the Get With The Guidelines Silver Plus Achievement Award and was recognized as part of the Target: Stroke Honor Roll, two quality recognitions awarded by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association.
