Preliminary Medicine Internship Year
If you are seeking a one-year preliminary medicine position (and are moving on to a specialty such as radiology, dermatology, or ophthalmology), you are still going to need an excellent background in general internal medicine to excel at your eventual career goals.
At NHRMC, you can have exceptional mentoring and learning opportunities within a technologically advanced health care system. You can experience all of this while living in a beautiful city with a mild climate and plenty of fun things to do.
At New Hanover, we ensure an excellent balance between education and service. Residents are on in-house overnight at the hospital during night float rotation only. There is between 4 and 6 weeks of night float during the internship year. We strictly abide by all ACGME regulations for internal medicine residency programs, including all regulations regarding duty hours.
At NHRMC, we participate in the National Resident Match Program (NRMP) and offer two major tracks:

As listed above, our program matches two preliminary year internal medicine residents each year. These positions are extremely competitive and tend to draw very strong applicants. In recent years, we have attracted exceptional students to our program from top U.S. medical schools:

The preliminary year is similar in most ways to the categorical internship year. One major difference is that “prelims” do not have a continuity clinic; instead, they participate in a weekly half-day acute care (‘AC’) clinic.
As an AOA-accredited program we encourage applicants from osteopathic schools. All AOA requirements for a Transitional Year curriculum are met. We offer both the one year transitional program, as well as the three year categorical program. We encourage osteopathic students to consider applying to our program through the AOA match.
Thanks again for your interest - we look forward to hearing from you!
