The SEAHEC Medical Library treats Residents as VIPs:  We do literature searches, copy journal articles, and obtain interlibrary loans of journal articles.
 
The Physical library is staffed 8-5  M-F; however, Residents can come in anytime with a badge swipe.  The library spans 3 floors, and contains physical books and DVDs that can be checked out.

The Digital Library contains 140 ebooks, 2000 ejournals, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, OVID Medline,  Dynamed and much more.  Residents also have access to UpToDate, MD-Consult, thousands of ejournals, and hundreds of ebooks through SEAHEC’s affiliation with the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Medicine Library.

The Robert M. Fales Health Sciences Library of SEAHEC is a medical library serving all health professionals in New Hanover, Pender, Duplin, Columbus, and Brunswick Counties. It is the largest health sciences library within 120 miles.

Books Over 4,000
Journals / Subscriptions Over 370 journal subscriptions
Audiovisuals / Videotapes Over 1,500 videotapes on various medical, health, mental health, and social topics.
VCR A VCR is available for viewing in the library.
Audio-Digest Audiocassettes on specific topics within medicine: such as, hepatitis, antibiotic therapy, transplantation, etc. Audiocassettes offer continuing medical education credits to physicians. (EXCELLENT for long car drives!)
NCME Videotapes (Network for Continuing Medical Education) An excellent resource which offers continuing medical education credits to physicians.
Newspapers  National, state and local newspapers available.

Interlibrary loans Health professional may request books or journal articles from another library.
Photocopy service Library staff will locate and photocopy (within copyright laws) requested material for health professionals.

 

Library Instruction, Orientation and Tours

Group tours, orientation, and instruction are available by appointment by calling the library. Individual assistance in the use of library materials is always available from the library staff.

Microcomputer Lab
Our microcomputer lab contains these electronic resources:
MEDLINE a database of over 3,500 bio-medical journals worldwide. Prepared by the National Library of Medicine.
CINAHL (Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature) database of journals and books. Current literature in nursing and allied health.
HealthSTAR A database of 1,000 journals in health care administration. Prepared by the American Hospital Association.
PsychInfo covers the world's literature in psychology
Health Reference Center (Infotrac) Consumer health database of 500 pamphlets, book chapters, and easy to read magazine articles.
Scientific American Medicine  
Micromedix Computerized clinical information system (contains drug, toxicology, and poison information)
Up-To-Date Current medical information pertaining to patient care and disease management.

Phone-in Service

Requests from health professional fro reference information, renewal of books, computerized literature searches, interlibrary loans and photocopies can be made by calling 343-2180.

Outreach Librarian

Our outreach librarian visits mental health center, health department, hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and other health facilities in counties in southeastern North Carolina. Our librarian provides training on electronic databases and Internet.
