Internal Medicine Residency
The New Hanover Regional Medical Center Residency Program in Internal Medicine
Introduction and Welcome
Thank you for your interest in the residency program in Internal Medicine at New Hanover Regional Medical Center!
Our program is an affiliate teaching site of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, based at the South East Area Health Education Center (SEAHEC). Our attendings share a passion for academic internal medicine and medical education. With our university affiliations and active, enthusiastic faculty, we provide a strong academic foundation for resident training in a supportive learning environment. Our residents' experiences are supplemented by a strong community base of subspecialty physicians who further augment residency training at NHRMC through elective experiences, hospital-based clinics, consultations, and research mentorship.
Currently, there are a total of twenty-three resident positions in our program – including seven categorical internal medicine residents for each of the three training years, and two preliminary medicine internship positions.
As an academic training site, there are numerous opportunities for our residents to develop their aptitude at teaching. Medical students from UNC rotate with us every month for their third year Medicine clerkship and fourth year acting internship, and we also sponsor students from the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University (ECU) and the Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine (PCSOM). In addition, we work closely with Campbell University and UNC Pharmacy students, as well as residents in the Pharmacotherapy residency at NHMRC.
At NHRMC, there are ample opportunities for our residents to participate in research experiences. In addition to support and mentorship from our key faculty members, SEAHEC has a dedicated research department to assist our residents with their research project needs. Many residents have gone on to publish book chapters and articles in peer-reviewed journals, as well as present posters and give talks at regional, national, and even international meetings.
The Internal Medicine Residency Program based at NHRMC offers a broad and thorough exposure to general medicine, while retaining the flexibility to meet the needs and the professional goals of each individual resident. A dedicated and accessible faculty group, coupled with a supportive learning environment, makes NHRMC a wonderful place to pursue residency training. It is truly our people that make this program great – we have a uniquely close-knit group of faculty and residents. The one-on-one teaching, mentoring, and support for our residents are what tend to draw the best resident candidates to our program. Our strength is having an academic, university-like educational experience in a small, friendly, community-based setting. We hope that we have peaked your interest in our training program, and we look forward to hearing from you!
