What is internal medicine? Internal medicine focuses on the treatment of adult diseases. Doctors of internal medicine - or internists - have training in handling many acute and chronic conditions - from the simple to complex. These physicians are not only equipped to treat diseases and conditions throughout various parts of the body, they can also help patients learn how to prevent illness.
Internists are specially trained to manage the overall needs of their patients and often act as primary care physicians. They manage patients' care for life - in the office, hospital and various healthcare settings - and care for the whole patient, including physical and emotional well-being.
