Discharge from the Rehabilitation Hospital

At the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Rehabilitation Hospital, the patient, family/caregiver, and rehabilitation team work together to meet the milestones that can lead to a return home.   The average length of stay for patients at the Rehabilitation Hospital is about two weeks. The following are considered points at which a discharge plan will be considered:

• The patient no longer requires inpatient hospital care and could be receive any additional services at a less intensive level of care.

• The patient no longer requires at least two kinds of rehabilitation therapy.
• The patient no longer requires three hours of therapy a day.
• The patient cannot tolerate three hours of therapy a day.

Patients also have the right to request discharge at any time and the right to leave against medical advice against any time.
