The Diabetes Bus Initiative
NHRMC and Pender Memorial Hospital offer free diabetes education classes in collaboration with The Diabetes Bus Initiative. Certified Diabetes Educators teach the classes at the hospitals, with each class being a series of three sessions that includes: Diabetes 101, Healthy Eating with Diabetes, and Staying Healthy with Diabetes.
The classes are based on a model developed by The Diabetes Bus Initiative® that promotes a comfortable rapport and uses a non-threatening approach to diabetes self-management. The curriculum incorporates practical diabetes skills, lifestyle goals that measurably impact diabetes outcomes, and peer support that empowers attendees as they learn together as a group.
In order to enroll, participants must be referred by their physician. You can download and print a copy of the the referral form and ask your physician to complete and fax it to 919.876.8465. Click here for the referral form. Once a referral is received by The Diabetes Bus staff, they will contact you about scheduling a class at a time and location convenient for you.

New Hanover County Health Department Classes
The New Hanover County Health Department offers diabetes self-management classes to individuals diagnosed with diabetes. Classes are available through referrals by completing the referral form and faxing it to 910.772.7805.
The classes, taight by either a registered dietitian or registered nurse, provide 10 hours of education in all areas recommended by the American Diabetic Association's National Standards including:
- Terminology
- Nutrition
- Exercise
- Medication and compliance
- How to monitor glucose levels
- Hyper/Hypoglycemia and sick days
- Complications of diabetes
- Depression and emotional reactions to diagnosis
