Expert cancer care – here, where you live

Medical Oncology is a field of cancer treatment that uses chemicals, hormones or biological products. Most people are more familiar with the term "chemotherapy," but today medical oncologists have a wider range of complementary or alternative therapies beyond chemicals.

However, in addition to those treatment methods, a medical oncologist acts as a kind of coordinator or clearinghouse for other cancer treatment options. These may include radiation therapy, surgery, or targeted therapy. Most cancer treatment regimens will include a combination of therapies, involving physicians from different cancer specialties. A Medical Oncologist acts as a guide for patients throughout the course of care, coordinating and managing the order in which those treatments take place.

We at Onslow Oncology strongly encourage patients to become advocates for their own care — partners, not bystanders, in reaching informed decisions about treatment options. Our affiliation with specialists and experts at the Zimmer Cancer Center at New Hanover Regional Medical Center offers our patients access to a range of treatment options that are expanding almost day by day. Helping patients and families make educated choices among them is a critical and invaluable part of our care.
