October 8, 2009 - Holiday Inn Resort, Wrightsville Beach:    Breakfast  7:30 am, Lunch  11:30 am, Dinner  6:30 pm

Since it's inception in 1998, the Pink Ribbon events and donations have raised more than $1,000,000 and provided over 4,000 "Comfort Bags" to area women as they undergo treatment for cancer. Distributed by the Zimmer Cancer Center and area physician groups, the Pink Ribbon Comfort Bags are designed to bring comfort to women as they traverse through their cancer journey... from diagnosis to treatment. Items included in the bags are:

  • Love, Medicine and Miracles, an inspirational book by Bernie Siegel, MD
  • There's No Place Like Hope, a guide to beating cancer by Vickie Girard
  • A small pillow sewn by volunteers from the New Hanover County Senior Center for use during chemotherapy and as a cushion between the seat belt and chest after surgery
  • A Pink Ribbon Daytimer® planner to keep track of appointments and write down questions for their doctor
  • A soft toothbrush and peppermints to help prevent mouth sores during chemotherapy
  • A satin pillowcase for comfort after hair loss and an herbal eye pillow to help with relaxation
  • The Satin Pillow, a book of helpful, non-clinical information and resources by Alyson Barnard and Jocelyn Lynch.

In addition to the Pink Ribbon Comfort Bags, the proceeds from Pink Ribbonevents also provide funding for uninsured women receiving mammography through the Coastal Care Van - the region's only mobile cancer screening van. In one year alone the Pink Ribbon Project funds provided over 800 women with mammography screenings and fourteen women with biopsies after a suspect screening mammography.

The incredible success of the Pink Ribbon events have not only provided early diagnosis and comfort to hundreds of area women, but has helped raise community awareness on the issue of women and cancer.

The 12th annual Pink Ribbon breakfast, luncheon and dinner will be held October 8, 2009 at the Holiday Inn Resort, Wrightsville Beach. This year's event is being chaired by Leslie Hales and will feature luncheon and dinner speaker, local author, Ellen Elizabeth Hunter. Local author and survivor, Connie Hill will be the breakfast speaker. Photographer, Brownie Harris, has created artwork inspired by the Pink Ribbon project. Proceeds from this year's event will continue to support the Pink Ribbon Comfort Bags and will expand its support of the Coastal Care Van to include providing added diagnostic services for women receiving a suspect mammography.

11th Annual Pink Ribbon - October 7, 2008
Benefiting the Coastal Care Van and the Pink Ribbon Comfort Bags

The 11th annual Pink Ribbon event enjoyed a record year due to the generosity of our community partners.  The number of community partners continues to grow. The Pink Ribbon events provide opportunities for so many members of the community to become involved in the fight against cancer.  For instance, merchants at Lumina Station sold pink ribbons in a month long campaign "At Lumina Station, Pink has a Purpose". Hundreds of community members came out and honored their loved ones by tying pink ribbons in the trees surrounding the grounds.

Other events included golf and tennis tournaments, a wall of water, a mountain bike race, a rock concert, and even a motorcycle scavenger hunt!

Sixteen local merchants, began a new effort known as "Retailers for the Ribbon". These retailers committed to making a donation to the Pink Ribbon Project based on a percentage of their October sales. These retailers made a choice to give back to the women in our community who in turn support them.

Attendees at the 11th Annual NHRMC Pink Ribbon Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner were treated to various guest speakers promoting the message of hope and compassion to women in our community diagnosed with and being treated for cancer. More that 900 guests attended the event October 7th, 2008 at the Holiday Inn Sunsree. Begun in 1998, The NHRMC Rink Ribbon Project has raised over $1 million dollars to help fight cancer in our community.
