Zimmer Cancer Center

2131 S. 17th Street    Wilmington, NC 28401    910-342-3000

The Facility

Opened in January 2000, the Zimmer Cancer Center is an example of what can be accomplished when the community comes together to help a good cause.  The Cancer Center was designed by teams of cancer patients, doctors, nurses and administrators, and supported through donations from the entire community.  The building not only offers outpatient services, treatment, education and support areas, it is designed to help lift the spirits of patients and their families.  Thanks to money raised by the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation and the 1999 Coastal Classic Celebrity Golf Tournament, the Zimmer Cancer Center is filled with nature photography, back-lit to create beautifully soothing images.

Radiation Therapy

The opening of the Zimmer Cancer Center brought radiation therapy back to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Campus, making it easier for patients to access care.  The Zimmer Cancer Center houses a linear accelerator with a multi-leaf collimator, electronic portal imaging and a dedicated CT scanner for treatment planning.

Radiation oncology services are provided by New Hanover Radiation Oncology Center.  The staff includes two board-certified radiation oncologists, two medical physicists, a dosimeters and a team of radiation therapists and nurses.

Clinical Trials

Patients may take part in national clinical trials through the Zimmer Cancer Center.  Clinical trials are the testing ground for new cancer treatments, ranging from new therapies to treat established cancers to new drugs that have the potential to prevent cancer.

The Clinical Oncology Research Program at New Hanover Regional Medical Center was organized in 1996 with the assistance of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists and gynecologic oncologists affiliated with the New Hanover Regional Medical Center program have participated in conducting more than 50 clinical trials for cancer treatment and prevention.

Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapy

Some people living with cancer go through changes in their functional abilities.  Therapists are available to help patients adapt and maintain the fullest possible measure of dignity and independence.

Nutrition

A registered dietician identifies factors that may contribute to malnutrition and a patient's ability to tolerate cancer treatment.  The department offered individualized counseling and assessments as well as group lectures and discussions.
