PMH celebrates one year in outpatient facility in Rocky Point
12/11/2008
You may not know that Pender Health & Diagnostics in Rocky Point opened a full year ago on Dec. 10, 2007, but Mr. Roger Wells who lives off of Highway 421 in Currie does, and he's quite glad it did.

'Once I found out I had to go (to Physical Therapy) three days a week, I asked to come here,' said Mr. Wells, an employee at the NC Ports who sustained a shoulder injury on the job last spring. 'That would have been a nightmare driving to Wilmington three days a week.'

In the last year, more than 2,300 patients have received diagnostic services or rehabilitation therapy at PH&D, which is conveniently located in the Rocky Point Medical Pavilion on Highway 117 South next to the post office.

'I was impressed,' said Mr. Wells. 'I didn't even know this place existed until I needed it. It takes me 12 minutes to drive here and there's hardly any traffic.'

Pender Health & Diagnostics, a Pender Memorial Hospital facility, currently offers diagnostic X-ray, CT, mammography, ultrasound, mobile MRI and outpatient rehabilitation services including physical, occupational and speech therapies. Also, Dr. Mary Lou Courrege from Lower Cape Fear Dermatology sees patients onsite at PH&D each Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

'Our high marks on our patient satisfaction scores definitely indicate that people are quite pleased with the care and comfortable environment that Pender Health & Diagnostics offers,' said David Long, administrator at PMH. 'We've been providing quality, patient-centered health care at PH&D for the people in our surrounding communities for a year now, and we hope to use it as a model to grow into other areas in the future.'

Dr. Connie Baker is on the medical staff at Pender Memorial Hospital and sees patients at Black River Family Practice, located in the same building as Pender Health & Diagnostics. She also has been opened for a year now and enjoys the convenience of sending her patients right next door for radiology and rehabilitation services.

'Patients are so thrilled that it (PH&D) is there because they don't like driving into Wilmington,' said Dr. Baker. 'They are surprised when I say it is right here.

'At Black River Family Practice, our mission (like that of Pender Health & Diagnostics) is to provide more health care access to the community,' she said. 'That's exactly what we're able to do here.'

Pender Health & Diagnostics is opened Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Patients may still schedule radiology procedures at the hospital's main campus in Burgaw; however, all outpatient rehabilitation services are provided at Pender Health & Diagnostics only.

All radiology results at PH&D are read by Delaney Radiologists, just as they are at Pender Memorial Hospital. A computerized image archiving system allows a secure image transmission of radiology tests directly to local doctors' offices, Pender Memorial Hospital, New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Cape Fear Hospital and Delaney Radiologists.

'They are nice here. Once it's over, I'll probably stop just to pop in and speak,' said Mr. Wells. 'It's starting to feel like family almost.'
