  • JOB SUMMARY:

    **The Phlebotomy Technician II works under the supervision of the Customer Service Manager. Scope of patient care ranges from Neonate (0-28 days), Infant (1-12 months), Child (1-12 years), Adolescent (13-17 years), Adult (18-72 years) and Geriatric (72+ years). The Phlebotomy Technician II is responsible for invasive procedures and techniques involved in the collection of blood specimens from patients for laboratory use in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.   The Phlebotomy Technician II serves as a primary link for the laboratory and interacts with physicians, guests, patients, family members, and other Medical Center staff to obtain or clarify information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears and elicit cooperation and collect specimens.  Must have excellent customer service skills, prioritization skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks.   Must have skills related to teaching, assessing and training of staff and students.  Performs other duties as assigned.

     

    PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:

    1.      Prepares the patient in a developmentally appropriate manner.  Properly identifies the patient, utilize written procedures for the maintenance of positive patient identification.

    2.      Receives, interprets, and processes physician orders, requisitions and patient information. Performs computer duties related to specimen collection and patient care. 

    3.      Records appropriate collection and other information related to specimen collection. . 

    4.      Prepare, process label and transport patient specimens and samples according to procedure.

    5.      Enter patient information into LIS system.  Access patient information in computer system. Perform functions related to releasing laboratory results to authorized individuals.  Maintaining patient confidentiality and patient privacy related to related to HIPPA.

    6.      Perform a variety of invasive blood collection procedures.  Works with biohazardous specimens, contaminated sharps, blood collection and other medical equipment. Must be familiar with and use standard precautions. Frequently works in different levels of biohazard isolation with a diverse patient population.

    7.      Maintains equipment, supplies, and work area.  Assist in ensuring a clean and safe environment and work area, which is functional as well as professional in appearance, safe for patient care, the public and staff. Maintains compliance with standards set by the medical center and all regulatory / accrediting agencies.

    8.      Clean neat and professional in appearance at all times.

    9.      Participates in education programs both within and outside the laboratory to ensure the highest degree of competency within the established scope of patient care. Participates in laboratory and medical center performance improvement and quality assurance programs and initiatives.   

    10.  Demonstrates New Hanover Regional Medical Center Standards of Performance at all times. Contributes to the effectiveness of the department and medical center Effectively demonstrates the mission, vision, values and standards of the Medical Center on a daily basis.

    11.  Provides information to other staff as needed. Must be familiar with, be able to use and train Laboratory and non-Laboratory staff in use of on-line manuals and LIS. Assist with training and orientation of students and staff.

    12.  Demonstrates strong interpersonal and customer service skills while performing duties.  Must have strong customer service skills related to answering telephone and interacting with a diverse customer base.  

    13.  Performs other job related duties, special assignments and assist others as appropriate and assigned.

    14.  Effectively demonstrates the mission, vision, and values of the medical center on a daily basis.

    15.  Performs other duties as assigned.

     


     

    ESSENTIAL JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

    1.      Education:  High School Graduate or equivalent required.  Some post high school education preferred.

    2.      Licensure / Certifications: must be nationally certified by NCA, ASCP, NHA or other national accrediting agency approved by the Laboratory Customer Service Manager.

    3.      Experience:  Completion of an accredited Phlebotomy program or one-year of Phlebotomy experience required.  Experience related to customer service and quality patient care preferred.

    4.      Essential Technical/Motor Skills: Requires good hand eye coordination and manipulative skills when using phlebotomy and other medical equipment and supplies.  Superior hand/eye dexterity with an excellent sense of touch.

    5.      Interpersonal Skills: Ability to deal with a diverse population including co-workers, patients, guests and physicians in a professional and positive manner.

    6.      Essential Physical Requirements: Requires a great deal of walking, reaching, carrying a phlebotomy tray, transporting specimens, standing, bending, sitting, and lifting miscellaneous items (up to 40 lbs.).

    7.      Essential Mental Abilities: Ability to read, write and communicate clearly in English.  Ability to apply reasoning, prioritize work, understand, follow, and recall policies, procedures and instructions.  Understanding of basic mathematics and ability to become proficient in the FlexiLab computer software system. Perform complex computer entry and problem resolution related to patient laboratory testing.   Ability to follow procedures related to patient identification and specimen collection. 

    8.      Essential Sensory Requirements: Ability to see, hear and communicate English clearly in order to perform patient care functions.

    9.      Exposure to Hazards: High exposure to potentially contaminated sharps, supplies and work surfaces.  Frequently works in patient areas with high level of isolation precautions.  Exposure to biohazard specimens, communicable disease, patient assault, violence in the workplace and other medical related hazards. 

    10.  Other - Hours of Work:  as assigned.  Department is staffed 24 hours per day, 7 days per week inclusive of holidays.  Arrival and departure for shift can be very early morning (0400) and other non-traditional hours.
