NHRMC teams with WECT on breast cancer education
01/21/2008
New Hanover Regional Medical Center is once again taking the lead in providing important healthcare information to the community. NHRMC is teaming up with WECT for the "Pink Pack" program. Together we've built upon the strengths of the former "Buddy Check 6" program and improved it with additional opportunities for education and outreach.

On the 6th of every month, WECT news anchor Frances Weller will present stories on breast cancer featuring interviews with survivors, women dealing with the disease and physicians who treat it. Viewers will be invited to log on to the station's website (click here), and receive a "Pink Pack", which will include promotional materials along with important information on breast cancer education.

We hope that as Pink Pack Pals, women will remind friends and family members to do the important breast self-exam. The Pink Pack contains illustrations that show how to do the monthly self-exam.
Here's how the Pink Pack Pal system works:

Designate a Pink Pal
Place the Pink Pack magnet on your refrigerator. Ask your Pink Pal to do the same.
Once a month, WECT will remind you to call your Pink Pal and remind her to do her breast self-exam.

emember to do your exam on the same day.
Breast self-examination is the first step in a very important three-part program for the early detection of breast cancer. According to the American Cancer Society and the National Institute of Health, the other two steps are breast examination by a physician and routine screening mammography. Our goal is to help find breast cancer early until there is a cure.

As the program develops, there will be opportunities to showcase additional educational materials, and to reach out to individuals, groups and organizations interested in partnering with NHRMC for outreach events.

This partnership is another example of New Hanover Regional Medical Center's commitment to creating a healthier community.
