Visiting a Patient

Visitors make a hospital stay more pleasant and are important to a patient's recovery. New Hanover Regional Medical Center welcomes visitors, but our priority is to provide an environment that is the best for our patients' recovery, security and privacy.  To help us do this, we ask that visitors observe the following guidelines:

Visiting Hours

General visiting hours are between noon and 8:30 p.m.  Family members may visit at any time. (Please note: certain areas, such as the intensive care units, Oaks and Birthplace may have exceptions in the policy for visiting hours and number of visitors.  Click here to read about specialty department guidelines.)

Number of Visitors

To reduce overcrowding in patient rooms, we ask that only two people visit a patient at a time.  Other visitors are welcome to wait in the concourse or other waiting areas.

Children

Unless they are members of the family, children under the age of 12 are asked not to visit.

Visitor Responsibilities

  • Be respectful of other patients.
  • Be as quiet as possible.
  • Dress appropriately.  Shoes and shirts are required.
  • Refrain from sitting/lying on floors and otherwise obstructing the ability of staff to reach a patient's bedside swiftly.
  • Talk with the patient's nurse about dietary restrictions before bringing food to a patient.
  • Use the cafeteria and public snack areas for personal meals and snacks.
  • Smoking is not permitted in the buildings.  Visitors must use the designated smoking areas outside.
