The surgery faculty of the Residency Program is notable for the background, training, and experience of its members. Fulltime faculty presently includes three attending surgeons, all holding appointments in the Department of Surgery of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill. Their primary responsibility is resident education.
Twelve surgeons in three private practices, Wilmington Health Associates, Coastal Carolina Surgical Associates and Miles Surgical, also support resident education, integrating residents fully in their practices. Both groups perform essentially all their major operations at NHRMC, with resident involvement.
Residents rotate through surgical subspecialty services in neurological surgery, orthopedic surgery, otorhinolaryngology, urology, plastic surgery, and cardiac surgery. Twenty-six surgeons in all specialties above, except orthopedic surgery hold part-time clinical appointments in the U.N.C. Department of Surgery. Of this group, nearly all are graduates of U.S. medical colleges (one graduate from Padua, Italy, and one from Johannesburg, South Africa) and all received postgraduate medical training from U.S. medical school-affiliated hospitals. Sixteen received additional training in their respective subspecialties, including such institutions as U.N.C., New York University, Georgetown, Florida, Johns Hopkins, South Carolina, Iowa, Mayo Clinic, Washington University, and the National Cancer Institute.

Visiting Faculty
Attending surgeons from UNC, Duke University Medical Center, East Carolina Medical Center, and the Carolinas Medical Center (Charlotte, N.C.) come to NHRMC twice a month to lead patient management conferences, give lectures, and discuss research projects. They provide a valued added perspective on both routine and problem cases, and enhance the learning environment for residents.
U.N.C. burn specialists and transplant surgeons act as attending surgeons for NHRMC residents during those rotations. The U.N.C.-Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill is the largest Burn Center in the southeastern U.S. The solid organ transplant program is the largest and busiest in the state.
