Surgery Call Schedule
| Call Schedule
The call schedule strictly follows the ACGME work hour rules. Residents average a little more than one night on call in three and two weekend days (Friday, Saturday or Sunday) every four weeks. Residents clock into the hospital time clock on entering the hospital and clock out upon leaving. This gives a completely objective means of tracking hours in the hospital. Total weekly hours are reviewed after two and three weeks so that four week averages fall below 80 hours. Call schedules are reviewed daily to make sure that time-off requirements (one calendar day in seven and a minimum of ten hours off after a night on call) are observed.
- Resident duty hours are limited to 80 hours per week, averaged over a four-week period, inclusive of all in-house activities.
- Residents will be provided one day in seven free from all educational and clinical responsibilities, averaged over a four-week period, inclusive of call.
- Residents will be given a ten hour time period for rest and personal activities between all daily duty periods and after in-house calls.
- In-house call will not occur more frequently than every third night, averaged over a four-week period.
- Continuous onsite duty, including in-house call, will not exceed 24 consecutive hours. Residents may remain on duty for up to six additional hours.
- Resident call hours from home are not counted as part of the 80 hour work week. If a resident is called into the hospital, the time spent in the hospital is counted toward the 80 hour limit.
