The New Hanover Regional EMS SMAT III is a special team that is comprised of the Special Operations Paramedics and field staff to provide local decontamination/medical treatment teams that could rapidly assist or start decontamination operations on victims from a chemical or biological exposure or other  incidents that require decontamination. 

SMAT III provides a first line of defense locally, assists at local hospitals, and can be deployed within the region or state at the request of the NC Division of Emergency Managment (NCEM) through the statewide mutual aid agreement.

NHR-EMS SMATIII works closely with SERAC's SMAT II, combining training and sharing of assets.
