Application Process

Application Process

We participate in the National Resident Match Program (NRMP) and offer two major tracks:

Important Points:

  • All allopathic candidates must apply through ERAS; osteopathic candidates should apply through the AOA match process
  • New Hanover Regional Medical Center does not accept or sponsor any visas
  • The acceptable minimum USMLE (two-digit) score is 80; almost all interviewed applicants have passed each USMLE Step on the first attempt and have already completed/passed Step II CS
  • Graduation from medical school should not exceed 5 years unless a candidate is exceptional and has ample U.S. clinical experience
  • IMG's who are permanent residents, U.S. citizens or EAD are welcome to apply
  • Both USMLE and COMLEX scores are acceptable
  • We participate in both the NRMP and the AOA match
  • The interview season begins November 1 and ends January 31
  • Applications are accepted through December 31
  • ECFMG certificates, when appropriate, must be current prior to match
  • Prior U.S. clinical experience is strongly preferred
  • Interviews are scheduled and communication is normally via email

Lunch with residents

Final meeting with the Program Director

The Residency Program in Internal Medicine at New Hanover Regional Medical Center is overseen by the faculty from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine who are based at the Southeast Area Health Education Center.
