Experienced Oncologist joins Zimmer staff
07/13/2006
The region's only nationally approved teaching hospital cancer program, New Hanover Regional Medical Center's Zimmer Cancer Center, has added a physician specialist, bringing expertise to the medical staff and creating greater access for cancer patients in Southeastern North Carolina.

Kenneth Fink, M.D., has spent the last 14 years of his 24-year medical career as a board-certified specialist in oncology and hematology, serving in Army hospitals abroad and in the United States.

'The professionalism and organization of the staff was evident right away,' he said of his decision to join the cancer center team. 'The center participates in National Cancer Institute-approved trials and is the only office in Wilmington doing this. This allows me to offer patients the most up-to-date treatment.'

Fink's dual certifications allow him to treat patients with both malignancies and blood disorders. He joins a team of skilled doctors who work together in cancer care at the Zimmer Center, including:
· Peter Ungaro, MD, Medical Oncologist, board certified in oncology and hematology
· Cyrus Kotwall, MD, Surgical Oncologist, board certified in surgery
· John Powell, MD, Gynecological Oncologist, board certified in gynecologic oncology, obstetrics/gynecology and laser surgery
· Walter Gajewski, MD, Gynecological Oncologist, board certified in gynecologic oncology and obstetrics/gynecology

'The aspect of the center that I appreciate the most is the ability to take time with patients and explain the type of problem they have,' Fink said, 'and be sure that they understand their problem and what can be done for them.'

Beth Mathews, director of the Zimmer Cancer Center, said the addition of Fink is consistent with the center's goal to achieve the best possible outcome for each patient.

'A large part of patient care at the Zimmer Center is provided by a team whose members have specific clinical expertise,' she said. 'In addition to physicians and nurses, patients have access to a dietitian, pharmacist, social workers and expressive arts therapists who help prevent, identify and resolve specific problems the patient may have during the course of treatment.'

Fink said he enjoys the teaching aspect of his practice.

'I also enjoy learning from others, and patients have taught me a lot,' he said. 'Keeping communication open at all levels is greatly rewarding to me.'
