NHRMC Emergency Department
2131 S. 17th Street Wilmington, NC 28401 910-343-2440
The emergency department at New Hanover Regional Medical Center is the Level II Trauma Center for Southeastern North Carolina, serving patients with acute medical and surgical needs. It sees more than 52,000 patients each year.
Expanded Department
To meet the growing needs of the community, the emergency department has undergone a major expansion and improvement project. The department, opened January 16, 2001, is almost double the size of the old department. It offers patients and visitors more space and privacy as well as upgraded technology and diagnostic equipment, including a sophisticated computerized radiology system that allows doctors to analyze a patient's X-rays almost immediately for faster diagnosis and treatment.
The Facility
The Trauma Center at New Hanover Regional Medical Center has 25 rooms, including two trauma rooms. The rooms are arranged in four "pods," or areas that can be separated from the rest of the department by glass double doors to reduce noise and increase privacy. There are rooms specifically designed for patients with ear, nose or throat problems, rooms for women's examinations and a room for psychiatric patients.
The Ambulatory Emergency Care Area helps ensure patients
with non-life threatening emergencies can be seen quickly.
Chest Pain Center
A six-bed Chest Pain Center allows people coming to the
emergency department with chest pain, but not an acute cardiac event, to be
moved out of the ED and into a more comfortable area to be monitored and more
rapidly diagnosed. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the center is
staffed with physicians and nurses specifically trained in cardiac care.
