The strength of the cancer program was recognized in November 2005, when the American College of Surgeon's Commission on Cancer re-approved NHRMC's status as a Teaching Hospital Cancer Program. The Zimmer Cancer Center is Southeastern North Carolina's only community cancer center dedicated solely to the diagnosis, treatment and support of people with cancer. It houses outpatient services, including chemotherapy, infusion therapy and radiation therapies. A special approach to caring for terminally ill individuals with a life expectancy of six months or less, hospice stresses relief of pain and uncomfortable symptoms as opposed to curative care. It also stresses the needs of the patient's family or caregiver, providing support and bereavement services for the patient's family.
