Coastal Care Van

 The Coastal Care Van brings screenings to people in Southeastern North Carolina who might not otherwise have access to them. The 40-foot long van is a FDA-certified mobile mammography unit. It typically partners with area health departments and community organizations, primarily in New Hanover, Pender, Brunswick, and Onslow County. Criteria for having a mammogram on the Coastal Care VanA doctor's order is required. Doctors should
perform a clinical breast exam prior to ordering the mammogram. The Coastal Care Van performs screeing mammograms only. If patients are having breast pain, nipple discharge, or if they or their care provider have felt anything unusual in their breast, they must be referred for a diagnostic exam and will not be seen on the Care Van. Participants must:
be at least 35 years old
have a doctor's order for the mammogram and must have had a clinical breast exam within the past 12 months
be able to climb steps to enter the van and stand without assistance during the exam
provide insurance, Medicare/Medicaid, BCCCP, or other payment information. If participant has no insurance or other form of third-party payment, then the mammogram may, if income requirements are met, be covered through the NHRMC Foundation Participants must not:
- have had a mammogram within the past 12 months
- have breast implants
- have current breast problems
- have had a mastectomy
- be breastfeeding and should have stopped at least six
months prior
- bring children on the Care Van without another adult to supervise them during the mammogram
The Care Van visits the health practitioners listed below each month. Each site keeps its own schedule. Appointments are required. To schedule an appointment, call a site convenient to you. The Coastal Care Van was originally funded by New Hanover Regional Medical Center's Community Health Improvement Program. It also was the beneficiary of the 1997 Coastal Classic Celebrity Golf Tournament, which raised more than $107,000 for the van. Today, grants from the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation help keep the van on the road, delivering health care to area residents.
