NHRMC Rehabilitation Hospital

2131 S.17th Street    Wilmington, NC  28401   910-343-7845

New Hanover Regional Medical Center's Rehabilitation Hospital is a 60-bed inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation facility on the New Hanover Regional Medical Center campus.  It helps patients with debilitating injury or disease recover mobility and independence both through inpatient treatment and the Day Hospital Program. The hospital treats patients suffering from chronic conditions such as arthritis or multiple sclerosis as well as patients who have suffered a traumatic brain or spinal cord injury.  The focus is on improving a patient's mobility, self care, communication, and social skills.

Facility

Opened in 1994, the Rehabilitation Hospital is a spacious, 66,000-square foot building designed to give patients every opportunity to practice the skills they need to become independent.  Included in facility is a 3,000-square foot therapy gym in which patients work to rebuild their strength.  The gym is also home to Easy Street®, a real-world environment that gives patients an opportunity to practice maneuvering on different surfaces, getting in and out of a car, shopping in a grocery store and managing at home. A heated indoor therapy pool provides additional therapy and exercise opportunities.

Programs

Acute Care Rehabilitation Services
Patients at New Hanover Regional Medical Center may begin receiving rehabilitation therapy while still in the acute care unit.  Therapists will start working with patients as early as possible to help speed recovery.

Inpatient Services
Patients admitted to the Rehabilitation Hospital on an inpatient basis get intensive 24-hour care.

Day Program
Patients who are able to spend their evening and nights at home but still need a lot of therapy to become more independent may be able to participate in the Day Program.  Participants spend four to six hours at the hospital a day, a few days a week.  Much of the activity in the Day Program is done in groups, with work in the gym and during community outings.
